It was truly a sight to see as a parade of modern-day and collectible fire apparatus, with flashing lights and roaring sirens, traveled throughout Southern California on May 14, collecting over $47,000 in donations in support of the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation's (AARBF) 20th Annual Burn Relay. This one-day relay event provides a unique opportunity to help raise public awareness about burn prevention while recognizing the fundraising efforts of many local fire departments. All proceeds raised will be used to send at least 60 children with burn injuries to AARBF's 2011 Champ Camp, a weeklong residential camp that caters to the special needs of burn survivors, ages 5-16, treated at locals hospitals in California.
The Relay is always a favorite among members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department and this year's event did not disappoint. Supervising Fire Dispatcher Rey Dong, who has served as the volunteer coordinator since 2005, was very happy with the efforts of our Department. He said, "There were almost 80 volunteers from L.A. County Fire, along with their friends and families. We also made $4,900 in donations through payroll deductions. Every year the majority of volunteers come from our Department and this year we had even better attendance than last." Supervising Fire Dispatcher Al Jackson, who volunteers almost every year, explained why he enjoys this event. He said, "It is certainly a worthy cause and it is fulfilling to know that the funds raised are making a huge impact. When these children go to Champ Camp it gives them a place to be themselves. They are free; they are able to enjoy normal activities without the scrutiny of other children who don't have those injuries. And above all else it's fun." Other special guests included actress Renee O'Connor, best known for her role as "Gabrielle" on Xena: Warrior Princess, and Dr. George Fishbeck, former ABC Eyewitness News anchor.
Acting Chief Deputy David R. Richardson, who attended the grand finale at Fire Station 118 along with Chief Deputy John Tripp, shared his thoughts on this yearly fundraising event. He said, "It's always an awesome experience to be part of the many volunteers from our Department that come together every year in support of AARBF. The support of those volunteers helps to ensure that children who have suffered burn injuries will have the opportunity to attend Champ Camp where they will be able to once again build their morale and self-esteem." Congratulations to Network Systems Administrator II Mike Morgan, who managed a three-peat, winning the chili cook-off for the third year in a row. Thank you to everyone that helped make AARBF's 20th Annual Relay a great success; we hope to see you again next year! |
