Fire Dispatcher II Fabio Castillo and Long Beach Public Safety Dispatcher Emily Heaslet win runners-up for Outstanding Performance by a Team - Fire from the California Public-Safety Radio Association.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Fire Dispatcher II Fabio Castillo was recognized along with Long Beach Public Safety Dispatcher Emily Heaslet as runners-up for Outstanding Performance by a Team – Fire by the California Public-Safety Radio Association during their 30th Annual Telecommunicators Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel.

In the award-winning call, Castillo answers and quickly works to get critical information from the caller who shares that his wife’s water broke a few minutes prior. Not a minute later, the baby was born and the location of the caller remained unclear. Castillo provided newborn care instructions to  father while connecting with Heaslet at Long Beach Public Safety to clarify the address on the border between Long Beach and Signal Hill.

As the two dispatchers stay on the line until support arrives, Castillo shares a happy coincidence — it just happens to be his birthday as well. The Department is extraordinarily proud of dispatchers like Castillo who are our first link in the chain of survival to over 350,000 patients each year.
