Explorer Leadership Academy

Explorer Leadership Academy 2017

by Pearl Castillo

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), Learning for Life and Inglewood Rotary Club hosted an Explorer Leadership Academy at Fire Station 171 in Inglewood.  The 24-hour academy took place over the course of three Saturdays in January and early February.

Explorers from LACoFD, the Inglewood Police Department, South Gate Police Department and Inglewood High School JROTC were invited to attend. The Explorer Leadership Academy aims to educate Explorers in leadership and communication techniques, career education, interviewing skills, money management, CPR/First Aid Certification, and social media professionalism.

Fire Chief Daryl Osby assisted with the graduation of 15 Explorers who participated in the academy. “Through the Explorer Leadership Academy, you learned how to serve your community which is an important and integral part of being a successful, well-rounded individual,” said Chief Osby. “I hope you take everything you learned and apply it as you move forward in the real world.”

The LACoFD Explorer program is for young adults 15 – 21 years of age who are interested in learning about a career in the fire service. It also seeks to provide young adults with a sense of responsibility to their neighborhood through ongoing community-related activities.
