The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Health Hazardous Materials Division (HHMD) held its first Public Outreach Day on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at its headquarters in the city of Commerce. Representatives from local government agencies, Department personnel and the public attended the event that was created to help increase awareness, understanding and support for the public health and environmental protection services HHMD provides.
Personnel from throughout the Division provided information and demonstrations at booths on the following services of HHMD:
Emergency Response Unit
Provides 24-hour incident response in order to control and mitigate any hazardous material or hazardous waste releases.
Conducts regulatory inspections for approximately 24,000 business facilities.
California Accidental Release Prevention Program (CalARP)
Inspects businesses that handle regulated substances, including refineries, chemical plants and refrigeration facilities.
Investigates civil and criminal complaints, including felony violations of California hazardous waste laws.
Site Mitigation Unit
Reviews and approves assessment and mitigation work plans for sites contaminated with hazardous substances.
