On May 30 and 31, 2018, the annual spring Mandatory Management Training (MMT) was held at Los Angeles County Fire Department headquarters.
One hundred sixty Department managers at the level of battalion/section chief and above, including uniform and professional staff, participated in one of the two days available for training on implicit bias and cultural competency.
The training was led by Dr. Bryant Marks, founder of the National Training Institute on Race and Equity. Dr. Marks gave an overview of what implicit bias is and looks like in the real world, and created opportunities for small group discussions on how to better empathize with one another.
This year’s all-day training on implicit bias built upon last year’s MMT in which Dr. Corinne Bendersky focused on implicit and explicit biases as well as social and emotional skills.
