During the week of February 25 through March 1, 2019, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) hosted a train-the-trainer course for members of international urban search and rescue (USAR) teams.
Twenty participants took part in the training sponsored by the United Nations and U.S. Agency for International Development. They included members of LACoFD’s Technical Operations Section as well as international USAR team members who traveled from Virginia (USA), Australia, Canada, Chile, England, Turkey and Uruguay.
This week-long course provided training for select members of International Search and Rescue Advisory Group-classified (INSARAG) USAR teams or teams preparing for INSARAG classification, and focused on the ability of USAR teams to establish continuity and consistency when coordinating specialized resources and efforts during the on-set of disasters.
LACoFD team members who participated as instructors in the training include Captain Andy Olvera, Captain Derrick Chapman and Engineer Stewart Sosa.
