In the early morning hours of October 11, 2019, crew members from Los Angeles County Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Strike Team 1120 and Engine 8 were dispatched to defend homes threatened by flames during the Saddleridge Fire.

As firefighters were busily pulling lines around one of the homes, they encountered a resident who was trying to protect his property by watering it down with a garden hose.

After speaking with him, the patient suddenly collapsed from cardiac arrest and Engine 8 crew members immediately provided advanced life support (ALS).

“Engine 8’s crew provided ALS care to the patient until Los Angeles City Fire Department Paramedic Unit 73 arrived and care was handed off,” said LACoFD Battalion Chief Travon Espy.

The patient was then transported to a local area hospital for further care but, unfortunately, passed away.

Engine 8 and Strike Team 1120 remained on scene in order to continue with firefighting operations.
