On January 8, 2019, Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) Ocean Lifeguard, Nick Wapner, experienced a harrowing shark attack while surfing off-duty at Montana de Oro State Park along California’s Central Coast.

Wapner surfs frequently up and down the coast.  However, on this day, while lying down on his board, a 15-foot Great White Shark bit his leg.

The 19-year-old avid surfer courageously paddled himself to shore after the attack.  He was then taken to the hospital where he received 50 stitches.

Wapner is expected to make a full recovery and remains enthusiastic about returning to his lifeguarding duties.
