NACo Achievement Award to Be Presented to LACoFD WPPRO Administrator

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) with a 2019 Achievement Award, in the category of Risk and Emergency Management, for creating the nation’s first fire department-based pharmacy. This award will be formally presented in July at NACo’s 2019 Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Department reinvented its entire drug procuring, inventory and distribution process, making it the first fire department to be state- and federally-licensed to distribute and manage emergency medications using an Automated Drug Dispensing System (ADDS) known as Pyxis.

“The transition to Pyxis was created out of necessity when County hospitals announced that the Department would have to procure its own controlled drugs. This transition has benefited our Department in so many ways; from helping us weather drug shortages to a reverse distribution program that saves thousands of dollars,” said LACoFD Medical Director Clayton Kazan, M.D. “It is great to see other departments looking to model their pharmaceutical programs after the Los Angeles County Fire Department.”

The Department is honored to be recognized for this achievement!
