The United States National Weather Service (NWS) hosted an annual coordination meeting with personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard office. LACoFD representatives included personnel from the Central Regional Operations Bureau Division VII, Battalion 5, Lifeguard Division, and Forestry Division.
The afternoon session included a review of the newest products available from NWS, including one for smoke detection. The session also had discussions on past wildland and mud/debris incidents, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) update, and the Lifeguard Division notification for lightning, high surf, and tsunami incidents.
“This is truly a great partnership with NWS as they assist the Department in fulfilling its mission by using the latest technology,” said Acting Forestry Division Chief Michael Y. Takeshita.
With the summer fire season in full swing and the fall season offshore winds around the corner, having the latest weather forecast is paramount to assist chief officers with resource staffing and situational awareness on incidents and planned events.
