On Saturday, June 30, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby helped welcome 54 individuals into the Fire Department as Ocean Lifeguard Recurrents. The new lifeguards were being recognized for graduating from the Department’s Ocean Lifeguard Academies 31 and 32. The ceremony took place at the Redondo Beach Seaside Lagoon.
The new lifeguards endured a 100-hour training over five consecutive weekends. The training included completing physical challenges and obstacles that are designed to simulate rescue scenarios that may happen during an actual emergency situation on the beach.
Among this class of graduates were an Olympic swimmer who competed multiple times for New Zealand; an athlete for the U.S. Men’s National water polo team; and a pilot for Southwest Airlines.
