The Los Angeles County Fire Department recently honored Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II Pravin Vora as this year’s recipient of the Fire Prevention 24th Annual Perpetual Award of Excellence. The award is presented as part of Fire Prevention Month in October to a member of the Fire Prevention Division for outstanding work in fire prevention and community involvement.
Fire Prevention Month aims to educate the public about various fire safety issues. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait—Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”
Fire Prevention Division personnel such as Vora work hard to make structures safe for people before the building is even opened.
“The work that our Fire Prevention engineering folks do every day keeps us all safe,” Deputy Fire Chief John Todd said at the Oct. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting after Supervisor Hilda Solis presented Vora with his scroll. “When we go into buildings, for public assembly or any kind of concert or event or … some place like Universal Studios, it’s because of the folks in our Fire Prevention Engineering Section that make those facilities safe before us, before we ever step foot in there, make sure we have a good time and go home safely.”
As Fire Prevention personnel, Todd, Assistant Fire Chief Philip Cocker and Chief Deputy Dawnna Lawrence watched, Vora thanked his colleagues, friends and the Board of Supervisors for the honor.
Vora is an 11-year veteran of the Fire Department; however, he has more than 30 years of experience in fire protection engineering. He is certified as Level IV—the highest level—in fire alarm systems by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. He is an expert in fire protection engineering of fire alarm, clean agent fire suppression, air sampling and wireless systems.
Additionally, Vora provided expert plan review oversight of several complex projects, including Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, as well as NBC Studios and the Universal Studios theme park’s Transformers and Harry Potter rides.
When not on the job, Vora is active in the local chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, where he has served as a board member since 2004.
Pravin and his wife, Mary, have a son, Rishi, who attends Georgetown University and is completing his third year of medical residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
