On Wednesday, September 5, 2018, Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger joined Fire Chief Daryl Osby at the Van Nuys Airport to welcome the arrival of the CL-415 SuperScoopers and the Erickson Helitanker. These firefighting aircraft resources are brought in every year to provide extra help. The aircraft are each leased for 90 days with the option to extend the terms, if needed.
“Along with our helicopter fleet, these are tremendous assets in protecting homes and the lives of residents in Los Angeles County,” said Chief Osby. “They provide critical and necessary aid.”
Known as Quebec 1 and Quebec 2, the tandem-flying SuperScoopers are leased through the Government of Quebec and have the capacity to each hold 1,620 gallons of water. The Helitanker has the ability to scoop up and store 2,650 gallons for use.
All three aircraft are now available and ready to respond to a wildfire anywhere in the county.
