The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Lifeguard Division responded to a report of a missing boater on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, in Lake Palmdale.

The Lifeguard Division’s eight-member Underwater Rescue & Recovery Unit (URRU), also known as DIVE1, collaborated with the Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team members in a multi-agency search that also included the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

To aid in the search for the missing boater, the URRU brought its new Sonar1 remote-controlled submersible technology and equipment which helps locate targets before team members dive into frigid water with limited visibility.

Ultimately, Sonar1 helped locate and recover the missing boater by pinpointing an exact location in the cold water.
