On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, the City of Hermosa Beach recognized 15-year-old James and 13-year-old Jackson (Jack) Lowrey at the start of its council meeting for heroically springing into action on the evening of September 13, 2022, after their father, Jim, suffered full cardiac arrest and went unconscious at their family home.

Both trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as Junior Lifeguards through the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), the brothers immediately worked together to save their father’s life.  Jack called 9-1-1 as James initiated CPR.  Minutes later, paramedics from Fire Station 100 took over CPR from the boys’ mother, Nicola, who also assisted in providing lifesaving care.

Thankfully, after a short stay in the hospital, Jim was released and has fully recovered.

The Lowrey family credits the Department’s Junior Lifeguard Program for teaching CPR and encourages everyone to learn this lifesaving procedure.
