The County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Lifeguard Division’s held a formal graduation ceremony for 57 Junior Lifeguard Program cadets on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the Lifeguard Division Headquarters in Manhattan Beach.

The Junior Lifeguards received a Certificate of Completion and an official County Junior Lifeguard patch for their successful completion of the program from LACoFD Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone and the Junior Lifeguard Cadre.

In addition to meeting the curriculum requirements of the Junior Lifeguard “A” group, cadets are required to be Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certified and attend advanced training to improve their physical fitness and expand their knowledge of ocean lifeguarding skills.

This advanced program prepares young adults for success in the Ocean Lifeguard candidate examination and creates a leadership corps within the Junior Lifeguard program.

Cadets have the opportunity to participate in intern tower days with professional LACoFD ocean lifeguards at various County of Los Angeles beaches shadowing ocean rescues, administering first aid, and experiencing the demands of the job first-hand.

Currently, there are over 120 cadet graduates employed by ocean lifeguard agencies, and that number is expected to increase.
